Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy Register UK

NCSAG2

The Executive Committee of the National College Student and Alumni Guild is pleased to welcome you to our website. It is hoped that prospective and existing clients will find this site a useful resource in learning more about hypno-psychotherapy and hypnotherapy and finding ethically trained practitioners from our hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register to assist them with a variety of psychological and emotional issues.

This site provides a hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register for the UK. There is a difference between hypnotherapy and hypno-psychotherapy, in that ethical hypnotherapists train for one year and undertake 450 hours of tuition in that time. Whilst hypno-psychotheapists train over a minimum of 4 years and undertake 1800 of Masters Degree level tuition. The vast majority members have been trained by the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy and the National School of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy which has trained hypnotherapists and hypno-psychotherapists since 1977 and 1980 respectively. Those who have not have completed the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma through a recognised training institute (for Affiliate Grade only). You can rest assured that those therapists found on our hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register have been trained to the highest standards with many also being accredited by such bodies at the UK Council for Psychotherapy, the European Association for Psychotherapy, and the European Association of Hypno-Psychotherapy

The grading of membership is as follows:

Licentiate

This grade is awarded to those who have completed the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma. The HPD is jointly awarded by the National Council for Hypnotherapy (a leading professional body for hypnotherapy (but not psychotherapy) in the UK and NCFE, a National Awarding Body (links to NCH and NCFE here pls). This training is of NVQ level 4 equivalence.

Student

Students of the National College are granted student membership and may work with certain issues under the guidance of their tutors. The fact that they are students must be made clear to all potential clients.

Hypnotherapy is the clinical application of hypnosis to assist clients to resolve problems arising from habits, maladaptive behaviours, pain (under medical supervision) and psychosomatic medical conditions. It can also be used to assist clients in maximising potential in settings such as work and sport. Hypnotherapists should be trained to a level 4 NVQ equivalent standard. Hypnotherapists are not trained to deal with deep psychological issues or psychiatric illness.

Psychotherapy is defined by UKCP (2009) as a process “to help clients gain insight into their difficulties or distress, establish a greater understanding of their motivation, and enable them to find more appropriate ways of coping or bring about changes in their thinking and behaviour. Psychotherapy involves exploring feelings, beliefs, thoughts and relevant events, sometimes from childhood and personal history, in a structured way.”

Hypno-psychotherapy is the clinical application of hypnosis to enhance psychotherapeutic interventions. Hypno-psychotherapists should be trained at masters level and are trained to deal with deep psychological issues and psychiatric illness.
